Organic Food: It’s Not Just Hype!

Some people think that the only difference between organic food and the rest of the produce in the grocery store is just the price. scientists have found this is not the case. A recent study in France published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that regular consumption of organic food such as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and supplements appeared to have reduced the risk of cancer.

Subjects were tracked over a period of 4.5 years, and scientists discovered that those who primarily ate organic food were 25% less likely to develop cancer, including a 73% lower chance of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and a 21% lower chance of post-menopausal breast cancer. Even subjects with poor diets but rich in organic food had a lower cancer risk than those who did not. Theories for this include a reduced chance of contamination in the food and supply chain for organic food. This appears to coincide with another study that found pesticides are causing cancer in humans.

Research is ongoing and it is by no means the case that everyone should immediately start buying organic food, but this study is a lesson to everyone to be mindful of the food they eat. Ask questions about what it is you are eating, why you’re eating it, and if there are better alternatives available to you. Through a more informed nutritional diet, you can see improvements to your health and quality of life.
